It was a good, but brief book. I enjoyed it and I could suggest it to any age group for the most part, but it was very deep. Mr. Johnson writes about how the mentioned scriptures affected his life and what struggles they got him through. The subjects it covered are Agony, Loneliness, Questions, Resentment, Requests, Frustration, Peace, Surrender, and Hope. A lot of them were linked and I found that when I thought I could relate to only a few, I found tips, essentially, in other chapters as well.
Something I really liked about each chapter was that he had the reader write down questions or statements regarding their feelings using prompts from the book. (He would start a sentence and have the reader finish it.) Then after those he would have a “Reflect + Pray + Discuss” section. So the reader has to recognize their feelings before responding.
Another great thing about this book is that, even if you aren’t experiencing something as extreme as what Mr. Johnson felt, you can still use this book. I found it helpful because it can also relate to smaller problems in my life. It also helped me realize how to respond when others tell me about their problems.
My only real complaint about this book would be that it was so short, I felt like it didn’t go into detail in certain places when it could/should have. Although, I do realize that could have been on purpose, so that the ultimate goal was to direct us to God when we need help and not to a book.
I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in return for an honest review.
